What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is a query and response internet protocol that is used worldwide for searching databases that store the registered users and/or assignees of an Internet domain name, an IP address, or an autonomous system (ASN), but is also used for a wider range of other information. The protocol stores and delivers database content in a human-readable format. This WHOIS information may include domain/IP´s name, address, telephone, email of the owner of a domain/IP. In the case of domain it also shows wich DNS has it assigned.

What is DIG?

DIG means "domain information groper" is a network administration command-line tool for querying Domain Name System (DNS) servers. DIG is often used for network troubleshooting. DIG can operate in interactive command line (also known as CLI) mode or in batch mode by reading requests from an operating system. In this case the default sever option to answer DIG is the Google´s DNS 8.8.8.8.. You can replace it with any DNS server you want.

How does it work?

Is really common doing a WHOIS to check which server is a domain pointing to. You can see the DNS assigned to each domain, but this doesn´t mean it is pointing to that particular provider. Using this tool will automatically DIG query so you can know whch IP address is the domain really pointing to without doing separate WHOIS and DIG querys. All in the same screen.
It works backward too. Doing a DIG will also return a WHOIS query.
